AI Role Play Interviews for Hiring, explained.
A role play interview asks a candidate to handle a realistic work conversation, such as a cold call, a renewal at risk, or an upset customer. InterviewFlowAI runs it with an AI character that stays in role, so every candidate gets the same scenario, the same difficulty, and the same scoring. Candidates join from a link, and your team gets a score out of 100, strengths, gaps, the recording, and the transcript.

Review the score, then the moments behind it.
Each call is scored out of 100 against your criteria, with strengths and gaps linked to the recording.

What is a role play interview?
A role play interview puts a candidate in a realistic situation from the job and asks them to handle it, live. Instead of asking how they would deal with an objection, you hear them deal with one. It is common for sales, customer success, customer service, call centre, and people manager roles, where how someone talks matters as much as what they know.
Traditionally a manager plays the customer. That takes manager time for every candidate, and the conversation changes with each manager and each day. With InterviewFlowAI, an AI character plays the other person instead, so every candidate gets the same conversation and you compare them fairly.
Why run role play interviews with AI
The same scenario for everyone
Every candidate meets the same character, brief, and difficulty, so results are comparable across candidates and hiring managers.
No scheduling
Candidates join from their invitation link when they are ready. Your team doesn't need to be on the call.
Scored on what you care about
Each call is scored out of 100 against the criteria you set, with must-pass criteria for skills you can't compromise on.
Evidence you can share
Strengths and gaps link to the exact moment in the recording, with the full transcript, so hiring managers can check the result themselves.
Role play interview scenarios by role
Describe the situation in your own words or start from a template. These are common role play interview scenarios:
| Role | Role play scenario | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| SDR or BDR | A cold call to a busy prospect | Opening, curiosity, and handling brush-offs |
| Account executive | A discovery call with a new buyer | Asking questions before pitching, and qualifying the deal |
| Account manager or customer success | A renewal at risk after a budget cut | Uncovering what changed and rebuilding the case for value |
| Customer service or call centre | An upset customer escalation | Empathy, staying calm, and resolving the issue |
| Team lead or manager | A difficult feedback conversation | Clarity, fairness, and agreeing next steps |
| Technical support | Troubleshooting a production incident | A structured diagnosis and clear communication |
How AI role play interviews work
Describe the scenario
Say who the candidate is, who they talk to, and what success looks like. The AI drafts the character, the facts they hold back, and the scoring for you to review.
Add candidates
Add candidates straight from an AI Interviewer's candidate list, or invite anyone by email or CSV. Each person gets a unique link.
The candidate takes the role play
They read their brief, join a live voice call, and talk to the AI character. The character stays in role and reacts to what they say.
Review and decide
Read the score, strengths, and gaps, listen to the key moments, and choose who moves to the next stage.
What candidates experience
- An email with a unique link. No account or app is needed.
- A short brief before the call: their role, the situation, and the objective.
- A live voice conversation of 3 to 15 minutes, in any of 16 languages.
- One attempt per role play, so every candidate is assessed the same way.
- A working microphone and a stable internet connection. You choose whether the camera is on and whether they must use a laptop.
Role play interview tips to share with candidates
- Read the brief closely. It tells you who you are, who you are talking to, and what success looks like.
- Ask questions before you pitch. The other person may hold back details until you ask the right question.
- Listen and respond to what they actually say, not to a script.
- Stay calm under pushback, and work toward the objective in the brief.
- Close by agreeing a clear next step.
