What to include in a job description
Job title
Use the title candidates search for, not an internal grade. Add the seniority only if it changes the work.
Summary
Two or three sentences on why the role exists and what success looks like in the first year.
Responsibilities
Five to eight duties, most important first, each starting with a verb.
Qualifications
Separate what the work genuinely requires from what would be nice to have.
Practical details
Salary range, location or remote pattern, working hours and employment type. Many countries and job boards expect pay to be shown.
How to apply
What happens after someone applies, and how long it usually takes.
A clear job description also makes screening easier: the responsibilities become your interview questions and the qualifications become your scoring criteria. Turn them into a weighted rubric with the interview scorecard generator, or polish an existing description with the job description optimizer.
Frequently asked questions
What is a job description template?
A job description template is a ready-made outline of a role's summary, responsibilities, qualifications and skills. You copy it, add your company's details such as salary, location and benefits, and adjust the duties to match the real job before publishing it.
How long should a job description be?
Most effective job descriptions are 300 to 700 words. That is long enough to cover the responsibilities, requirements and practical details, and short enough that candidates read to the end.
What should not be in a job description?
Leave out anything unrelated to doing the job: age ranges, nationality, family status, "young and energetic" or "digital native" wording, and degree requirements the work does not need. Vague superlatives such as "rockstar" also put good candidates off.
Can I use these templates in the UK, Middle East or Australia?
Yes. The templates are written in plain international English and avoid country-specific legal terms. Add the details your local market expects, such as salary, notice period or visa sponsorship, and check local employment rules before you publish.
How do I create a job description with AI?
Use the free job description generator: enter the job title, seniority, location and any details you already know. It writes a structured description and lists the details you still need to add, such as salary or benefits, instead of inventing them.
